Dumerso Washing Station is nestled in the lush highlands of Ethiopia’s Gedeo Zone, Dumerso is a woman led washing station producing some of the region’s most expressive and iconic coffees. Located just north of the town of Yirga Chefe, Dumerso showcases the elegant florals and layered complexity that have made Ethiopia Yirgacheffe a global standard for premium arabica.
Owned by Hirut Berhanu, an experienced coffee processor and former member of the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange, the Dumerso station was revived in 2010 and fully operational by 2013. With a skilled local team led by site manager Abenet Alemu, Dumerso employs over 400 workers during harvest, 95% of whom are women.
Processing at Dumerso is meticulous. First, ripe cherries are depulped the same evening they’re delivered, fermented underwater for up to 48 hours, and dried on raised beds under constant care. This precision yields coffees with extraordinary clarity, vibrant florals, and refined sweetness.
Beyond quality, Dumerso Industrial Trading PLC is a force for sustainability and community uplift. The station holds organic and Rainforest Alliance certifications and is developing renewable fuel from coffee parchment to reduce deforestation. Local electricity access, healthcare, housing, and microloans are among the many benefits Dumerso extends to it’s staff and neighboring communities.
Whether fully washed or naturally processed, Dumerso’s coffees are a testament to Ethiopia’s deep-rooted coffee heritage, thoughtfully produced and richly expressive in every cup.
